Lit 8 Group Discussion numero dos

After finishing Genesis, our group got together a second time to discuss our thoughts on the first section of the Poisonwood Bible. We put down on paper what we were going to present, and in the process of that discussion, discovered that we could connect our Lit 8 to the essential sophomore english question: "How should we live in this world?"

As each of the characters adapts to the congo, each of them come up with thier own way to deal with the changes. Each day they realize an expectation of theirs has been broken. Suddenly the cake mix has no value, and the once treasured blond hair is an object of mockery. Each must change their way of gardening, eating, drinking, talking. Leah finds it the most difficult that she can't speak the language. English seems useless. Worldly Rachel is so out of place with her long white-blond hair that she can't even walk out of the house without being stared at. But slowly, each to his or her own adapts. The reverend learns how to garden, the mothers learns how to feed her children and keep them from the many diseases. Adah learns that she is not the only deformed one and that she is more accepted because of her flaws.

Overall, it has been a rough start for this family. They had no idea what they were getting into and came completely unprepared. But despite that, they have managed to survive the first few months. This goes to show that even the most unlikely family can function half way around the world, despite it's many differences.
